The Best Start in Life: EYFS at Verwood CE First School 

From birth to age five, the Early Years Foundation Stage is a magical time of discovery. In our Nursery and Reception classes, children are guided by a devoted team committed to nurturing inquisitive, independent, and ambitious learners.

Rooted in our Christian Values, our vision is based on the Biblical message that Jesus is the light of the world and we are called to share that light (Matthew 5:14). We describe hope as having confidence in God's promises, knowing that he will never let us down (Hebrews 10:23).  This means that we all aspire to shine our own light in everything we do - at school, in our local community and within the wider world. Alongside these, we weave our core values ‘readiness’, ‘engagement’ and ‘respect’ into our everyday learning, to ensure every child has the emotional and mental tools to thrive.

We place a strong emphasis upon children’s personal, social and emotional wellbeing to ensure all our learners feel safe, can relate to others and are ready to learn. We strive for all children to feel a sense of belonging and to develop an understanding of people, families and communities beyond their own and work in close partnership with parents and carers. 

We create opportunities for children to develop language and communication skills, alongside the specific teaching of vocabulary.  We foster children’s self-esteem and belief in their abilities and capabilities; and our growth mindset approach develops positive attitudes towards learning, enabling them to be resilient, motivated and successful.

We believe that when children feel safe and belong, they are truly ready to learn. By blending structured teaching with purposeful play, we spark a sense of awe and wonder in every lesson. Our goal is simple: to recognise every child’s unique starting point and provide a holistic, joyful education that prepares them perfectly for Year 1 and beyond.
